COURSE:

Accessibility in the Built Environment (2-Day)

Course Description:

This 2-part training has been designed to enhance the knowledge of building officials, designers, contractors, and other individuals with respect to accessibility in the built environment. The series will challenge participants to view accessibility through multiple lenses and will surely broaden the perspective of code officials while illustrating a path for future accessibility code requirements to follow.

Part 1 of the series will provide participants with an understanding of the evolution of accessibility requirements in construction codes under the backdrop of major historical events starting in the early 1900s until current day. Next, a look at the legislative framework of accessibility issues will help to frame the discussion on individual rights, mandatory codes and the role of different acts and organizations which relate to accessibility requirements. Following this, the course will explore the concept of human centered design through a combination of videos, activities and in-class instruction.

Part 2 of the series covers technical aspects of Accessibility Standards Canada’s Model Standard on the Built Environment – Accessibility for Federally Regulated Entities as Defined in the Accessible Canada Act.  The course will walk participants through each of the major sections of the Standard and discuss at a high level the requirements and their application. The course is designed to introduce building practitioners to the standard, explore the future of accessible requirements, discuss how they differ from current codes and how they can make buildings more accessible. It will also provide participants with an understanding of how to navigate the standard.
